Group Project - Change in art styles

Group Project - Change in art styles

So it has been a while since I have blogged on any updates with the group project game. What with the holidays and the rush of assignment completion before Christmas. So I thought now would be a good time to update with the progress so far. We actually got off to a slow start before probably in part because I was very new to the course and the software that we use. I am now starting to get a good grip on some of the features these programs have available and also picking up tips and tricks of fellow students in the process.

All in all being back off holiday and having a better understanding in the fundamentals of code and art feels like it was time to make a fresh start and get stuck in to the project. In our design group we use a project management software known as Jira and the year two project leaders set tasks for us in the software. We can log on to this software from home and see the tasks and time to complete these tasks allocated to us. Now I am getting the hang of it Jira is fantastic.

So back to the game. So we now have code in place and art and have a very basic MVP however what was happening was with so many artists working on the project the artwork didn't fit together. Here are some examples of the artwork that have been included so far.

This is one version of the start menu background we had before.

This is also a version of the game menu

After a group meet we discussed about doing all the art as vector graphics in illustrator that way not only can it be imported easily into flash and be resized and manipulated however we need. I then went to work on redesigning the menu in illustrator and come up with this simple design.

Now everything on the example above is not only vector graphics but everything is on its own layer which means it can essentially be used as building blocks to make whatever scene we like and maintaining art consistency throughout. The signpost in the foreground can be added to and changed and we were going to have the signpost as buttons n the game so players can click on the different signs and go to where they like.

Now here are some examples of previous art for the game screen

This was one of the first backgrounds for the game screen however it wasn't vector art and wast as versitile in flash

This was a first attempt by me to do art straight inside flash however I didn't find this suitable and the artwork seemed very blocky and bland.

Using the same art style I learnt in illustrator I completed a background for the game screen that looks more polished and still has vector graphics.

There is still allot more to be done as of yet and I will blog more updates soon.
